Air Marshal Vinod Patney SYSM PVSM AVSM VrC (Ret’d) 

Air Marshal Vinod Patney is a decorated veteran of the 65 and 71 wars. He is also is a graduate of the Royal Air Force Staff College as well as founder member of the premier Tactics & Air Combat Development Establishment (TACDE) of the Indian Air Force.

        During his long and illustrious career he held various Command and Staff appointments which include Command of a Jaguar Base, Air Advisor London, Air Officer Commanding of Jammu & Kashmir, Air Officer Commanding-in-Chief of Western Air Command, Air Officer Commanding–in-Chief of Central Air Command as well as the Vice Chief of Air Staff of the IAF etc.  A distinguished Air Marshal,  he was awarded the Sarvottam Yudh Seva Medal (SYSM) on 06 April 2000 for spearheading air attacks during the Kargil war, thus making him the first and sole Air Force Officer to receive the award till date. 

      He was a member of the National Security Advisory Board from December 2001 to January 2004. In 2006, he was part of a study ordered by Prime Minister and led by late Shri K Subrahmanyam on Global Security. He has contributed articles on National Security issues to number of eminent periodicals. Has also participated/lectured at Seminars/Track 2 dialogues in India and abroad. Has authored a book titled “Essays on Aerospace Power”. He is one of India’s eminent thinkers and writers on the subject of Aerospace and National Security issues.  He retired as the Director General of Centre for Air Power Studies, in March 2018.
